Fish is 4.7 inches long!
This is an uncommon fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is a fine Knightia alta from the Green River Shale. This type used to be referred to as a ''pregnant'' version of the common type of Knightia, but has now been found to be a different species entirely. This distinct fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed, and even the scale pattern of the fish is somewhat preserved. The striking fish has nice natural color that contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The fossil herring is well showcased on the large, semi-squared plate of shale. This is a very cool example of this unusual fossil herring from the Eocene.
