    Description

This is a well-preserved fossil fish,
    Knightia eocaena
, from the famous Green River Formation (Eocene, 50 million years old) near Kemmerer, Wyoming. The Knightia species (
    Knightia eocaena
    and
    Knightia alta
) are common in Fossil Lake and may be the the most common vertebrate fossil in the world!
This Knightia is extremely well-preserved with skin and bones visible and is 3.22 inches long. The entire specimen is in a matrix of calcite/limestone from the famous18 inch layer. The plate measures 4.65 inches long by 4.1 inches wide by 0.33 inches thick. The fossil has been preserved professionally and color enhanced.
